PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treatment method for an engine valve made of titanium or titanium alloy capable of forming a hardened film of high adhesion with a surface, excellent in wear resistance and shock resistance. SOLUTION: This surface treatment method for the engine valve made of titanium or titanium alloy includes a hardening treatment process forming a hardened layer on a surface of the engine valve by making oxygen dissolve as solid solution inward from the surface of the engine valve and a coating treatment process applying coating treatment by PVD method on the surface of the engine valve after the hardening treatment process.
