PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information processing apparatus which communicates in communication environment supported by an extending unit, and provide a communication control method used in the information processing apparatus. SOLUTION: A System BIOS 13a refers to a Dock ID and a table 13d which are led from an E2PROM 34, judges link speed to which a docking station 2 corresponds (S201), and furthermore informs judged link speed to an OS 13b (S202). To a register 24b arranged in a LAN controller 24, by using the informed link speed, a driver 13c sets link speed to which a LAN connector 24b arranged in the docking station 2 corresponds (S203). After link speed is set in the register 24b arranged in the LAN controller 24, the LAN controller 24 performs auto negotiation with a communication partner through the LAN connector 24b (S204).
