A loft ladder has a folding construction to provide access to an upper floor or loft via a hatch (10). The upper end of the structure has a folding frame and supports a winch (36) via which loads are moved up and down the ladder on a support platform. The structure folds into a compact size and is stored folded above the hatch which is secured by a hinged flap.
