Hollow articles are drawn from a hot thermoplastic sheet B, formed by slitting on extruded tube T, by means of moulds each of which comprises co-operating upper members 1b, 1c hinged at 1f to a base 1a which is mounted on a suitable endless chain. The sheet is clamped against each successive mould by means of a jack operated member 9 carried by a frame 7, the member engaging suitable means on mould members 1b and 1c so that the frame is drawn, by each mould, along rails 6. During this movement resist plug 10a is lowered, and the sheet blown into the mould by pressure fluid from conduit 12. A ro-entrant batten (see Fig. 4, not shown) is subsequently given to the article by means of bottom mould piece 2 which is raised by a jack 13 carried by members 7b of frame 7. At the end of the drawing operation, member 9 is released and frame 7 returns under the action of a counterweight to its original position to perform another cycle with the next mould. The formed article is separated from the sheet over a sharp ridge 1e (not shown) of the mould by means of rollers 17, the scrap material being fed back to the extruder 3 via a granulator 4. The article is subsequently released from the mould.by the opening of members 1b and 1c under gravity as the moulds pass over the return roller of the endless chain.</p> |
