PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element having satisfactory driving durability without deteriorating luminescent characteristics. SOLUTION: An organic electroluminescent element has at least a luminescent layer between a pair of electrodes and an adjacent layer adjacent to the cathode side of the luminescent layer. The luminescent layer contains a phosphorescent material and a host material, and the adjacent layer contains an electron transport material and a hole transport material. The electron affinity Ea(HT) of the hole transport material and the electron affinity Ea(ET) of the electron transport material satisfy the relation of 2.8eV≥Ea(ET)-Ea(HT)≥1eV.
