PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent degradation in startability caused by abnormality even if a part of a plurality of valve timing control mechanisms of an internal combustion engine is abnormal. SOLUTION: When the valve timing mechanism (VVT) of either of right bank or left bank is abnormal in the start, valve close timing of an intake valve of a normal bank is controlled to be on a valve timing side where output by combustion becomes higher than that in a normal start, that is, the timing is controlled to come close to an intake stroke BDC (S110, S114). Therefore, degradation in startability of the engine caused by the abnormal bank out of the right and left banks can be canceled to some extent. Valve open timing of the exhaust valve may be controlled to come close to an expansion stroke BDC. Therefore, degradation in startability caused by the abnormality is prevented, even if a part of the VVTs is abnormal. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
