The operating process is for an engine which idles at preset idling revs with optimized fuel consumption and idling parameters such as the ignition time point and fuel injection. In at least one part time region of the idling dish, an exhaust gas enthalpy is achieved by setting at least one of the parameters deviating from the idling parameters. This enables the revs of the exhaust gas supercharger to be raised.
