PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyamic acid for an optical material having heat resistance, high light transmission in a visual to ultraviolet region, flexibility and improved processability, and expected as an electronic material in a liquid crystal display element and a semiconductor, and a material for optical communication such as an optical waveguide; and to provide a polyimide and a method for producing them. SOLUTION: The polyamic acid comprises a repeating unit represented by formula [4], and the polyimide comprises a repeating unit represented by formula [8]. (In the formulas, R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>5</SP>are each a hydrogen atom or a 1-10C alkyl group; R<SP>4</SP>is -O-, -CH<SB>2</SB>-, -C(CH<SB>3</SB>)<SB>2</SB>-, -S-, -SO<SB>2</SB>- or -Si(CH<SB>3</SB>)<SB>2</SB>-).
