PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the motion of a sheet surface or the like which moves within a printer. SOLUTION: The device to be interacted with a sheet S comprises: a first optical sensor 10 recording an image in a two-dimensional array of pixels, the optical sensor having acuity to recognize a terrain of a small area on the sheet that is substantially blank to a human eye, and being arranged to view a portion of the sheet moving in a processing direction through a passage; and a detection system which compares at least two recorded terrain images from the sheet, thereby directly measuring velocity and direction of the sheet.
