PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated member having high hardness and toughness, and superior in chipping resistance and abrasion resistance. SOLUTION: A titanium sulfide (TixSy(x>0, and y>0)) part 7 is dispersed and distributed at a rate of 4 to 30 pieces in about a length range of 100μm along an interface 6, when observing the interface 6 between a titanium-based lower layer 4 and anαalumina layer 5, by polishing a cross section of a hard coated layer 3, by providing the hard coated layer 3 composed of a single layer selected from carbide, nitride, carbonitride, carboxide, nitrooxide and carbonitroxide of titanium or the titanium-based lower layer 4 composed of a double layer of two layers or more and theαalumina layer 5 composed of aluminum oxide forming anαtype crystal structure, on a surface of a base body.
