APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR DETECTING NUMBER OF PEOPLE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine the number of people through relatively easy signal processing without being affected by a measuring environment.

SOLUTION: An apparatus for determining the number of people present within a predetermined monitoring area uses a means having both a laser radar for obtaining distance information at each position within the monitoring area by applying laser beams within the area in a scanning fashion, and detecting the laser beams reflected, and a number determining part for determining the number of people present within the monitoring area by determining the height of each person on the basis of the distance information at each position, and comparing the height with a threshold value that corresponds to the height range of a person of standard physique from a neck to a head.
