PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate glass for a flat panel display device which has a high strain point, high heat resistance, high toughness and low density and enables a large-scale production. SOLUTION: The substrate glass for a flat panel display device comprises, by weight, 64-69% SiO<SB>2</SB>, 0.5-5% Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, 2-6% Na<SB>2</SB>O, 6-14% K<SB>2</SB>O, 6-12% MgO, 0.5-8% CaO, <2% SrO, 0.5-5% ZrO<SB>2</SB>, 68-75% (SiO<SB>2</SB>+Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>+ZrO<SB>2</SB>), and≥10% but <16% (CaO+MgO+BaO+SrO). The glass has an average linear expansion coefficient at 30-300°C of≥76×10<SP>-7</SP>/°C but≤88×10<SP>-7</SP>/°C, and the melt temperature at the melt viscosity of 10<SP>2</SP>dPa is≤1,580°C.
