PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface consolidating method of wood which facilitates the loading and taking-out of wood, enhances productivity by a press freely raising and falling in its temperature, and seals the steam formed from the moisture in the wood at the time of temperature rise by a simple constitution to drastically enhance productivity. SOLUTION: The surface layer part of the wood M is compressed and consolidated by press plates 8, 8a, etc., and heated by the heated press plates 8, 8a, etc., the seal materials 22 and 22a formed to the pressing surfaces of the press plates 8, 8a, etc., in a protruded state are allowed to bite into the surface layer part of the wood M to close the end parts of the cavities of cells to form treatment spaces which are, in turn, filled with high temperature and high pressure steam formed by heating the moisture in the wood M not only to treat the surface layer part of the wood M with the steam but also to cool the press plates 8, 8a, etc., to cool the surface layer part of the wood M and the surface layer part of the wood M is compressed, consolidated and molded under heating and sealed by the seal materials 22 and 22a to fix the deformation of the surface layer part of the wood M.
