<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which operability is improved so that maintenance, as to the operations of kits and the like, is facilitated despite its small structure. <P>SOLUTION: While a cam holder handle 41 is pushed in (FIG. 6(a), (b)), a cam follower 49 is pushed up along the cam groove 48a of an advancing/retracting cam 48, and a release cam 42 is rotated clockwise while sliding its cam face 42a over the cam face 48b of a cam 48. Consequently, an optical writing head 11 is set in a regular position. When the cam holder handle 41 is pulled forward (FIG. 6(c)(d)), the cam follower 49 is pushed down along the cam groove 48a of the advancing/retracting cam 48, and the release cam 42 is rotated counterclockwise while sliding its cam face 42a over the cam face 48b of the cam 48.
