PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document management system that enables reliable execution of the management of a printout document, especially the discard of the document.

SOLUTION: A printout document is output with document attribute information recorded thereon. When a multifunction information processing apparatus 213 having a document discard function such as a shredder executes document discard processing, the attribute information included in the printed document is read and matched against registered information to identify the discarded document. The configuration enables reliable identification and management of the discarded document. Image data of original data the same as printout data is registered and retained as management data. The read image of the document to be discarded is comparatively matched against the registered image to check for document tampering, and the discard is executed or canceled accordingly.
