PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber for maintaining pressure in a damper as desired even when operating oil enters from a reservoir into the damper. SOLUTION: The hydraulic shock absorber comprises a connecting rod 5 having a cap 6 connected to the end of a damper cylinder and an accumulator joined to the cap, a guide 4 fitted and fixed to the outer periphery of the connecting rod, a hollow free piston 30 slidably inserted into the inner periphery of the end of the guide, the inner periphery of the damper cylinder and the inner periphery of a hollow portion of the cap, an elastic partition wall member 20 fixed outside the guide, gas chambers 7, 9 defined inside the elastic partition wall member and in the cap, respectively, and communicated with each other, and an oil chamber 8 defined outside the elastic partition wall member. A return spring 10 is laid between the cap and the free piston, and a through-hole 19 is formed in the damper cylinder for communicating or shutting the reservoir with or off the oil chamber with the sliding operation of the free piston.
