PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymerization catalyst having an olefin polymerization activity and prepared by a simple procedure and to provide a method for producing an olefin polymer. SOLUTION: The polymerization catalyst is prepared by mixing a cyclopentadiene compound represented by formula (1) with a transition metal compound containing a group 5 to 10 transition metal in the periodic table of elements. In formula (1), Cp<SP>1</SP>is a group having a cyclopentadiene skeleton; A is a group 14 atom, except a carbon atom, in the periodic table of elements; R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, and R<SP>6</SP>are each a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a substituted or unsubstituted 1 to 20C alkyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted 1 to 20C alkoxy group, a substituted or unsubstituted 6 to 20C aryl group, a substituted or unsubstituted 6 to 20C aryloxy group, or the like; provided that the adjoining groups among R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, and R<SP>4</SP>may be suitably bonded to each other to form a ring or rings, and R<SP>5</SP>and R<SP>6</SP>may be bonded to each other to form a ring.
