A transmitting/receiving method wherein a transmitter transmits vertical and horizontal polarization signals and a receiver receives them from the transmitter. The vertical polarization signal includes both a vertical polarized wave identification signal for identification of a vertical polarized wave and a vertical polarized wave data signal serving as a data signal. The horizontal polarization signal includes both a horizontal polarized wave identification signal for identification of a horizontal polarized wave and a horizontal polarized wave data signal serving as a data signal. The vertical and horizontal polarized wave identification signals are transmitted at the same time. The vertical and horizontal polarized wave identification signals and the vertical polarized wave data signal are generated from signal sequences having a quadrature relationship therebetween. The vertical and horizontal polarized wave identification signals and the horizontal polarized wave data signal are generated from signal sequences having a quadrature relationship therebetween.
