PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optimal surface plasmon resonance element with high resolution and high sensitivity, by optionally adjusting the refractive index of dielectric substance and adjusting the size of pores of the porous material and density.

SOLUTION: The surface plasmon resonance element comprises: a transparent substrate 20; a porous dielectric substance layer 21 formed on the surface of the transparent substrate; a metallic thin membrane 24 formed on the porous dielectric substance layer; and a prism 25 adhering to the bottom of the transparent substrate.
