The sensor has a locally resolving optoelectronic receiver (43), and an evaluation and control unit connected with an optoelectronic receiver (23). The receiver (23) monitors a protection field (27) of a machine and outputs the corresponding received signals to the unit. Operating parameter for the sensor and/or machine is identifiable by the unit based on the received signals of the receivers (23, 43). An independent claim is also included for a method of configuring an optoelectronic sensor for protecting a machine e.g. press brake, bending press and stamping press.
