Provided are techniques relating to a recording device for recording a recording medium such as a DVD, and to a technique for enhancing the replay compatibility of the recording medium. There is a replay device, which cannot physically read information for decrypting encrypted data from a predetermined area of the recording medium, because of its specifications, due to the situations or the like having standards planned after the device was manufactured, so that it cannot use the recording medium. In order that the replay device may also be able to use the recording medium, the recording device reads the data recorded in the predetermined area of the recording medium, and records the read data in such another area as can be read by the replay device.
