<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve high quality multi-color display by leveling the brightness in the display of each color, in a liquid crystal element of a system for performing the color display using color filters for a plurality of colors. <P>SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal element 20 having a dimmer layer 13 using a liquid crystal between a pair of transparent substrates 11a and 11b having transparent electrodes and of the system for performing the color display using the color filter 15 for the plurality of colors arranged on the side of one substrate 11a, at least one substrate 11a is the substrate in which a part of a surface layer 12a corresponding to filter parts 15R, 15G, and15B for the respective colors of the color filter 15 has a critical surface tension pattern that differs for each color. The scattering dimmer layer 13 in which the liquid crystal is dispersed in a polymer matrix capable of controlling a light scattering state and a transparent state by an external electric field is arranged between the substrate 11a and the other substrate 11b.
