摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain reading performance with high contrast by controlling a white reference level of a component by internally accommodating the component functioning as a white reference. SOLUTION: An image sensor includes a light source 1, a lens 7, a sensor substrate 9 having an imaging device 8 mounted thereon, a first polarization plate 2, a second polarization plate 5 disposed opposite to the first polarization plate with a different polarization direction, a liquid crystal module 3 sandwiched between the first polarization plate 2 and the second polarization plate 5, a signal processing means for signal processing of the output being opto-electrically converted by the imaging device 8, and a cabinet 12 accommodating the light source 1, the liquid crystal 3, and the sensor substrate 9. Prior to reading an original, a voltage is applied to the electrode of the liquid crystal module 3, the light is reflected on the second polarization plate 5, the reflected light is received in the imaging device 8, and the opto-electrically converted output thereof is stored in the storage circuit of the signal processing means, as shading compensation data during brightness.
