<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove an adhering substance only when necessary by a simple configuration and to always obtain satisfactory image quality with minimum time and toner consumption that are necessary. <P>SOLUTION: A tandem image forming apparatus 1 is provided with an adhering substance removal mode, in which at the time other than the time of the normal image formation, the tandem image forming unit 1 primarily transfers the toner image onto the intermediate transfer body 501 from at least one of photoreceptors and then the toner image is carried to the intermediate transfer body cleaning unit 520. The adhering substance removal mode exerts control by detecting various information such as the number of image formations, the temperature and humidity of environments surrounding the apparatus, which are detected by temperature and humidity sensors, and an image area rate, which is the proportion of the area of a latent image formed by exposure. Accordingly, an adhering substance can be removed only when necessary by the simple configuration.
