<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of reducing the number of times of a pressure varying operation by a pressure varying mechanism and thus prolonging the life time of the pressure varying mechanism. <P>SOLUTION: The states of the pressure varying mechanism are stored in a nonvolatile memory. When a power source is on, information is read from the nonvolatile memory (S21). When the information indicates pressure release (S22) or when a sensor detects the state in which the pressure varying mechanism has released the pressure rotator from pressure (S23), a pressure applying operation is performed (S24).
