STORAGE MEDIUM AND STORAGE AREA SWITCHING METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a storage medium usable without requiring reset for initialization by a conventional recording/reproducing device when it is initialized by a recording/reproducing device capable of handling a mass storage medium. SOLUTION: This readable/writable storage medium 100 is provided with a first memory 140 having a data area 160 and a system information area 150 for the data area, a second memory 170 storing system information to the specific area of the data area 160, and an initialization action detection means 310 detecting operation for initializing the storage medium 100 by the recording/reproducing device. When the initialization action detection means 310 detects that the recording/reproducing device is going to perform initialization by a FAT16 file system different from a current FAT32 file system, a controller 120 stores system information about the detected FAT16 file system in a second memory 170 and makes the second memory 170 operate as a system information area for the storage medium 100 until a specific event occurs.
