The present invention provides a method for enhancing epidermal permeability barrier function of the aged skin, which includes the step of externally administering to the aged skin an amount of a fumaric acid diester derivative expressed by the following general formula (1) as an active ingredient wherein R<SUP>1 </SUP>represents a C<SUB>1-4 </SUB>alkylene group; R<SUP>2 </SUP>and R<SUP>3 </SUP>each represents a linear or branched C<SUB>1-8 </SUB>alkyl group; and n is an integer of 2 to 5.
