The screen (4) of a VDU has a control (6) to set the intensity of the backlight (7) illumination. A sensor (10) registers the level of ambient light, linked by a signal carrier (12) to an analog/digital converter (11) and a signal channel (13) to an evaluation unit (1) with a look-up table (LUT), to match the screen backlight to the ambient light by a reduction in the intensity and/or switching it off.
