<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damping water control method which can control the supply of damping water more precisely than by the conventional method, with the use of detection patches, and a printing device. <P>SOLUTION: A parallel line pattern patch (m) with not less than 200 lines and not less than 60% duty ratio and a solid patch (s), are printed together with a printing image, and this print density (Dm and Ds) is detected. Next, the coefficient of water W=(Dm/Ds) is calculated from the detected density (Dm and Ds), and it is judged whether the supply of the damping water is appropriate, based on correlation data indicating the relationship between the previously stored supply of the damping water and the coefficient of water W.
