The device has a cutter-type separating unit with a cogging, and two props swiveling around a swiveling axis. A movable part of an operation unit (9) is connected with a clamp over a connection. The unit operates to move the clamp back and forth and to swivel the separating unit around the swiveling axis, for performing a cut-through transverse to the operating direction. An adjusting unit (5) varies the stroke of the operation unit. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for cutting through a sheet or a film tube (2) a method for operating a separation unit.
