Polymers of olefins are made by effecting the polymerization of the monomer in the presence of a catalyst comprising iodine, or an organic or inorganic iodide, a titanium fluoride, chloride or bromide, and lithium, or lithium hydride, or a lithium hydrocarbon compound. The polymerization is preferably effected in an inert hydrocarbon medium. The olefin may be butadiene, isoprene, or piperylene, and butene-1, or butene-2, may also be present. The polymers may be recovered by conventional techniques, and antioxidants incorporated in the polymers either just prior to, or after the termination of the polymerization. Specified iodides are potassium, sodium, methyl, and methylene iodides, iodoform and lithium-aluminium trimethyl, triethyl, or triethylhexyl iodide. Specified lithium hydrocarbons are methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, and n-octyl. Exemplified titanium compounds are the tetra-chloride and bromide.
