[Also in Division A4] A maize harvester comprises a frame 10, a first gathering means 36 on the frame for gripping the standing crop, conveying it rearwardly a short distance and then releasing it, a second gathering means 60 to grab the standing crop after release by the first means and to convey it rearwardly, and cutting means 92 which severs the crop as it is grabbed by the second gathering means. The gathering means include two dividers 32, 34 V-shaped in both elevation and plan and spaced to produce a convergent entrance to a longitudinal crop-conveying channel 35. The first gathering means comprises toothed endless chains 38, 39 overlapping at a grip-point 49 and diverging at a releasepoint 50. The second means comprises a similar pair of chains 61, 62 travelling, within the channel 35, at a higher speed and overlapping at a grab-point 69. The chains thereafter run together to feed the crop, butt-end foremost, between feeding rollers 26, 28; additional rollers 76, 89 above and below the passage assist in spreading the crop out into a band as it enters the rollers 26, 28. The rollers 76, 28 and 89 are ribbed, the ribs of the roller 76 acting as stripping means for the teeth 66 of the gathering chains 61, 62. The feed-rollers pass the crop into a chopping chamber 14 where a bladed rotor 15 cooperates with a ledger-blade 20 to chop the crop and discharge it up a shoot 25 for delivery into a wagon behind.
