The invention concerns a method for controlling a software maintenance process in a software system landscape (200) having a plurality of logical systems (202), wherein independent service software components (204) are executed in a central control system (203) and used to perform actions of the software maintenance process for servicing the logical systems (202), wherein the service software components (204) communicate with a phase controller (205) that coordinates the software service components (204) and allows and denies actions based on a phase (401, ..., 408) of the software maintenance process and on phase definitions comprising allowed and/or barred actions. The invention also concerns a corresponding computer system (200) and a computer program product comprising on a storage medium a computer code that upon execution on a computer system performs the method.
