Textile fabrics, e.g. cotton and wool fabrics, are desized and/or bucked and/or bleached by steeping them in water, preferably at an elevated temperature, pressing them to reduce their moisture content to 80% or less by weight, passing them through a chemical solution appropriate to the required treatment at substantially room temperature (e.g. 20 DEG -30 DEG C.), subjecting them to a further pressing operation to eliminate excess solution, the moisture content after pressing being 10-40% by weight higher than that obtained before impregnation, and then bringing them to the temperature necessary for the reaction and maintaining at that temperature until the end of the reaction when a final washing is carried out. The water in which the fabric is steeped may contain an inorganic salt, e.g. sodium chloride, ammonium chloride and sodium phosphates, an organic salt, e.g. sodium acetate or formate, aluminium formate or sodium alginate, or a wetting agent, e.g. an alkyl-aryl sulphate or condensation product of a fatty alcohol with ethylene oxide. For carrying out the desizing enzyme solutions may be used, for bucking alkaline solutions, and for bleaching hydrogen peroxide, sodium chlorite or sodium hypochlorite. The fabric may be impregnated with the various chemical solutions with pressing and heating in between impregnations but with no washing between the undividual treatment stages. Bleaching solutions may be thickened by the addition of starch. The alkaline bucking solutions may contain salts of persulphuric acid, hydrogen peroxide or alkali metal peroxides and condensation products of albumen degradation products with fatty acid chlorides. Heating of the fabric after impregnation with the chemical solution may be effected by steaming with saturated or superheated steam, or by infra red radiation. |
