A method of and system for cryptographically securing communications includes converting the communications to quantum states, transmitting the states of a receiver, observing the quantum states, and confirming that the observed states equate to the converted quantum states. The quantum states are arbitarily chosen photon polarisations which represent either a value of '1' or '0'. The transmitted states are observed by the receiver measuring their polarisation using arbitrarily chosen measurement types (rectilinear, diagonal). Confirmation involves a (public) discussion between the sender and receiver as to which of the measurement types used coincided for each state sent, but not the results of those measurements. A key is then formed only from the bit values detected using the correct measurement types. Applications include the postage system.
