The method of applying liquids to materials in accordance with parent Specification is modified in that the excess liquor is conducted away by a covering of porous resilient material which consists of a foamed material having unconnected cells, there being open pores at the surface of the covering. The material used in the preferred embodiment is neoprene. The covering may be an annular cover on a roller with a non-porous resilient cover there-beneath or it may be in the form of a continuous belt passing around the roller and around a further roller remote from the first.
