<p>An abrasion resistant decorative laminate comprises a core, e.g. of multiple layers of paper impregnated with phenol- or cresol-aldehyde resin, and a surface layer, e.g. of printed paper, coated with a composition which is clear and translucent when cured and which comprises a thermoset resin, silica, and microcrystalline cellulose of refractive index approximately equal to that of the cured resin. The proportions of materials preferably used are 5-30 parts of finely divided silica and 10-50 parts of microcrystalline cellulose per 100 parts of resin. The composition may contain a water-soluble thickening agent such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol or gum arabic. The preferred thermoset resin used is melamine-formaldehyde but alternatives mentioned are other condensation products of aldehyde with triazines, urea, dicyandiamide or phenol, (decolorizer resin), or polyesters, e.g. a propylene-maleic anhydride/phthalic anhydride ester copolymerized with styrene or epoxy resins. The laminate is made by applying to the core a coating of the same resin as is used in the coated layer, superposing the latter, and hot pressing between polished stainless steel or other plates.ALSO:An abrasion resistant decorative laminate comprises a core, e.g. of multiple layers of paper impregnated with phenol- or cresol-aldehyde resin, and a surface layer, e.g. of printed paper, coated with a composition which is clear and translucent when cured and which comprises a thermoset resin, silica and microcrystalline cellulose of refractive index approximately equal to that of the cured resin.
