PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low friction sliding mechanism that can largely decrease the friction coefficient of the sliding member having a hard carbon thin film applied thereto in the presence of lubricating oil. SOLUTION: The low friction sliding mechanism is constituted with sliding members as they mutually slide on and lubricating oil that fills spaces between the sliding members. The sliding members are coated with a hard carbon thin film with a hydrogen content of less than 20 atom% and the lubricating oil comprises a base oil having a sliding velocity of 4.4 m/s, a Hertz pressure of 0.53 GPa, and an oil film thickness of less than 95 nm at 100°C oil temperature. To the lubricating oil, are added a calcium salicylate cleaning agent and an ash-free friction-controlling agent. A compound bearing oleyl group is used as an ash-free friction controlling agent.
