Application software installation prequalification system and method

A system and method is used to identify and resolve issues that may prevent a software application from being properly installed in a target environment. A diagnostic tool kit provides a set of custom actions that a packager could use to instrument their package to return information about the status of the install. These actions send the data back to a repository for storage. Package instrumentation analyzes a package and generates a streamlined package containing only the components required to simulate an install and custom actions from the diagnostic tool kit. System administrators are able to specify which diagnostic actions they want included in the generated package. Once the package has been generated, the system administrator can deploy it across the intended machines. As the package installs it simulates an actual install on a target machine. Diagnostic custom actions are executed and the results will be sent to the repository for later analysis and reporting. The reporting system allows the system administrators to see a summary report on the deployment, and drill down to examine any specific problems that occur.
