Olefins are obtained by dehydrohalogenating halohydrocarbons in fractionating column containing a metal catalyst at 150-500 DEG C. and continuously recovering the olefin formed by distillation as overhead and separated from hydrogen halide by condensation. The halohydrocarbon may contain fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine or in a paraffin, isoparaffin, cycloparaffin or alkyl aromatic molecule, and may be mixed with hydrocarbon, e.g. as the product of halogenating a hydrocarbon at a molar conversion of up to 50%. The catalyst may be a metal of Group 1a, 2a, 2b, 3a, 5a, 6a, 7a or 8 or alloys thereof particularly iron, steel, copper or nickel. The pressure in the column should preferably be sufficient to ensure that the halohydrocarbons boil above 150 DEG C. Alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons are obtained by alkylating aromatic hydrocarbons with products from the above process. Detergent alkylates particularly are obtained using C8-C30 olefins obtained from n-paraffins by halogenation and dehydro halogenation. |
