A flowing electrolyte battery, comprising:
first and second electrodes separated by a membrane, the battery exhibiting an electric potential across the first and second electrodes when anolyte flows through the first electrode and catholyte flows through the second electrode;
a first and a second valve in fluid communication with the second electrode, the first valve being an inflow valve to the second electrode, and the second valve being an outflow valve from the second electrode; and
a controller configured to control operation of the first and second valves such that:
the first and second valves allow catholyte to flow through the second electrode in a normal operating mode of the battery, while preventing anolyte from flowing through the second electrode, and
the first and second valves allow anolyte or an electrically neutral fluid to flow through the second electrode in a neutralized operating mode of the battery, while preventing catholyte from flowing through the second electrode, to chemically neutralize the battery. |
