PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep optimum fixing temperature at all times by accurately detecting the temperature of a fixing roller even when a temperature sensor detecting the surface temperature of the fixing roller without touching it is soiled. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus has: a fixing means by which a toner image transferred onto a transfer material is fixed by heating or heating/pressing; a surface temperature detecting means by which the surface temperature of the fixing means is detected without touching it; and a temperature adjusting means by which, on the basis of a surface temperature detected by the surface temperature detecting means, a heating member provided to the fixing means is driven and thus a temperature adjustment is made so that the temperature of the fixing means reaches a specific temperature. The surface temperature detecting means has an infrared ray detecting member for detecting the amount of infrared ray, and a thermister for temperature compensation for the infrared ray detecting member. The degree of soil on the measuring surface of the surface temperature detecting means is detected from a difference in voltages applied to the roller of the fixing means.
