PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sensor for measuring variations in the attenuated total reflection which reduces the effect due to the difference in refractive indexes between sample liquid and reference liquid to enhance measurement accuracy. SOLUTION: In this method, sample liquid 11 and reference liquid 11' are respectively furnished to a measuring chip 6 and a reference chip 6' with sensing matter 30 assigned, a light beam 13 is allowed to enter at various angles so as to obtain total reflection conditions in an interface 10b between a metal film 12 and a dielectric block 10, the light beam 13 that has been subjected to total reflection in the interface 10b is detected by a photodiode array 17, and then measurement result of the reference unit 1' is used to compensate measurement result of the measurement unit 1, measuring the variation in the attenuated total reflection. Prior to measurement, in a mixer 52, a concentrated solvent or PBS is mixed with the reference liquid 11', to adjust the attenuated total reflection angle of the reference liquid 11' detected in a total reflection attenuation angle detector 53 so as to be much the same as that of the sample liquid 11 detected in a total reflection attenuation angle detector 43.
