PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gathering device for taking out paper sheets one by one from a plurality of paper feed units arranged along a gathering and conveying passage, and merging and overlapping the paper sheets in the gathering and conveying passage in which the same paper sheets are stacked with a plurality of adjacent paper feed units as one set, the paper sheets are fed from one of these paper feed units, the paper feed operation is transferred to another paper feed unit out of this one set if no paper sheet is left behind, and the problem of paper sheet absence is solved when the paper feed operation is shifted from the downstream side to the upstream side of the gathering and conveying direction. SOLUTION: A time interval calculation means to calculate the time interval of the gathering operation is provided so that no paper sheet absence occurs according to the number of paper feed units in one set to stack the same paper sheets, the length of the paper sheets, or the like, and the gathering operation is performed for each calculated time interval.
