PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric door closer which dispenses with man power for compressing a spring, allows the operator to open a door with extremely slight power, and eliminates oil for adjusting a closing speed. SOLUTION: The electric door closer is formed of a main spindle which has a receiving drum and is rotatable in interlock with opening/closing operation of the door; a bearing which has a bearing gear coaxially rotatable with the main spindle, and is accessible to/separable from the receiving drum and also frictionally engageable with the same; a cam connected to an electromagnetic solenoid to make the receiving drum accessible to/separable from the bearing; a driving means which is in mesh with the bearing gear to rotate the main spindle and the bearing in one body; and a rotational angle sensor which senses a rotational angle of the main spindle and transmits a signal for operating the electromagnetic solenoid and the driving means. According to the operation of the electric door closer, when the door is opened, the electromagnetic solenoid and the driving means are activated upon reception of a signal transmitted from the rotational angle sensor, and the receiving drum and the bearing are frictionally engaged with each other, followed by rotating the main spindle and the bearing in one body, to thereby close the door.
