Methods are provided for prevention or treatment of inflammatory disease in a mammal by administering an inhibitor of mitogen activated (MAP) kinase system to the mammal in a therapeutic amount to the mammal in need thereof. The MAP kinase inhibitor is targeted to the central nervous system of the mammal. Methods are further provided for prevention or treatment of inflammatory disease in a mammal by administering an antagonist of TNF-a to the mammal in a therapeutic amount to the mammal in need thereof. The TNF-a antagonist is targeted to the central nervous system of the mammal.
