PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ball bearing unit that can increase displacement in the axial directions of an outer wheel 3 and a hub 4a, based on variations in an axial load and can fully secure measurement accuracy of load. SOLUTION: An encoder 12 where the pitch of a change in the characteristics of a surface to be detected gradually changes in the axial direction is externally fitted and fixed to the hub 4a. Displacement in the axial direction of the outer wheel 3 and hub 4a is detected according to the change in the duty ratio of the detection signal of a sensor 13 that is made to face the encoder 12. Then, the axial load, applied between the outer wheel 3 and the hub 4a, is obtained by the displacement. The ratio d/D of the diameter (d) of respective balls 5, 5 to the pitch circle diameter D is regulated to be in the range of 0.12-0.4, and variations in the duty ratio following the variations of the load are increased, thus solving above problems.
