PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase control accuracy by modeling the variable valve mechanism of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The model of the variable valve mechanism is estimated by using a spring constant K (θ<SB>CS</SB>) calculated as drive current i<SB>CS</SB>/control shaft operating angleθ<SB>CS</SB>for each operating angleθ<SB>CS</SB>of a variable engine valve.
