A load-controlling circuit for use in controlling the energization of a load, such as a solenoid coil 2 of the stapling machine described in Specification 1,008,412, by a source of undulating potential comprises a first circuit means 7, 8, 9 for connecting a gated rectifier 3 and the coil in series with the source, manually-operable switch means 5, and second circuit means 14, 15, 16 controllable by the switch for controlling the gated rectifier so as to render it conductive for no more than one complete half-cycle of the undulating potential occurring following the operation of the switch. With the switch 5 in the position shown, current flows from the conductors 4 through a rheostat 6, resistor 7, rectifier 8 and resistor 9, through a rectifier 10 to charge a capacitor 11 and, via the contacts 5a, to charge a second capacitor 13. The second circuit includes a capacitor 15 and resistor 16 connected to the base electrode of a transistor 14. When the switch is operated so as to open the contacts 5a and close the contacts 5b and, at the start of the next positive-going half-cycle, the transistor 14 is placed in a conductive condition via the capacitor 15 and resistor 16, so as to thereby cause a gated rectifier 18 to become conductive and allow the charge from the capacitor 13 to pass therethrough and via the contacts 5b and rectifier 3 energize the coil 2.</p> |
