PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital camera which enables reliably and quickly switching photographing of landscape/portrait aspect image without blurring or damaging image visibility, and to provide an image aspect switching method and programs. SOLUTION: On the back of the digital camera 200, a display unit 40 is provided that has a square liquid crystal display screen 42. The liquid crystal monitor screen 42 is constituted of square-shaped arranged display elements, light emission elements arranged in the same way as display elements on the back of the display elements and a back light. In a portrait aspect image photographing mode, a display area 45 in the aspect ratio of 3:4 is used in all display area on the liquid crystal monitor screen 42, so that a through image is displayed as a landscape aspect image in the aspect ratio of 3:4 (Fig.(b)). On the other hand, in a landscape aspect image photographing mode, a display area 46 in the aspect ratio of 4:3 is used in all display area on the liquid crystal monitor screen 42, so that a through-image is displayed as a landscape aspect image in the aspect ration of 4:3 (Fig.(a)).
